The skin is the most amazing organ. It guards the body against aggressive elements in the environment. It is super strong but flexible. It is durable and remarkably resilient. The human body sheds 30,000 to 40,000 skin cells every hour. We lose some 1 million cells in the course of a day!  The numbers may sound shocking, but no worries – individuals have approximately 1.6 trillion skin cells, and they regenerate about every 28 days.  

At any given time 20 to 30 rows of dead cells are part of the visible layers of the skin. Left unattended dead cells accumulate and cause dry, red, itchy patches, blemishes, flaking, and a dull, tired appearance. Adding safe, gentle exfoliating to a regular skin care regime can help remove dead skin, reveal a brighter complexion, and improve the effectiveness of other skincare products!

Exfoliating is simply the process of removing dead cells from the surface of the skin before they naturally drop off. Elimination of some dead skin is accomplished with daily activities and cleansing. With proper techniques and refined products, deeper exfoliating provides a great way to improve the skin’s appearance. It is essential to determine the best process based on individual skin type. Products that are too harsh or abrasive and aggressive scrubbing tools can damage the skin and cause more harm than benefits.

There are two basic types of exfoliating; chemical and mechanical. Chemical exfoliating involves the application of products that contain compounds to release and dissolve dead cells.  Mechanical exfoliating uses tools like brushes, sponges, or other instruments to physically scrub dead skin away.

Dermatologists and professional estheticians use advanced scientific techniques to exfoliate. To safely exfoliate skin at home, follow procedures as recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology.  

 

1 – Evaluate your current skin condition, all products used for skin care, and the consumption of prescription medications. Some formulations and medications can make skin especially sensitive. Recent sunburns, rashes, bug bites, skin injuries, and other conditions should be considered before exfoliating. Chemicals such as retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and alpha hydroxy acids can worsen existing conditions.

2- Determine your skin type and choose the method most suited for that type. Dry, sensitive skin may tolerate nothing more than a soft washcloth or brush and a gentle cleanser.  Oily skin may require a stronger treatment to achieve desired results.

3 – Be GENTLE with your skin. Regardless of skin type and exfoliating method always use a gentle approach. Use chemical products or tools with a light touch. Apply with a circular motion concentrating on small areas at a time for 30 seconds and rinse in lukewarm (never hot) water.

4 – Always moisturize after exfoliating. Exfoliating dries the skin.  Use moisturizers immediately after procedure to rehydrate your skin.

5- Repeat as determined necessary. It is possible to get too much of a good thing, especially when exfoliating.  The frequency of the process should be determined by skin type. Never exfoliate if your skin is irritated, sunburned, or if you have open wounds.  Over-exfoliating can lead to red, inflamed, flaky, damage-prone skin.
