Is Cosmetic Surgery the Best Option or are there Alternatives?

     The surgical approach to improving one’s physical appearance is not new.  Ancient Egyptian transcriptions document surgery was performed to change human’s appearance as long ago as 3000 BC.  Sushruta, a physician in India developed techniques for reconstructive surgery in the 6th century BC. An Italian physician named Gaspare Tagliacozzi worked perfecting methods to reconstruct the nose. In his writings, Taliacozzi states his medical mission, “We restore, rebuild, and make whole those parts which nature hath given, but which fortune has taken away. Not so much that it may delight the eye, but that it might buoy up the spirit, and help the mind of the afflicted.” Dr. Gaspare Tagliacozzi is considered by many to be “the father of modern cosmetic surgery.”

   Cosmetic surgeries performed before the 19th century were a very painful and dangerous proposition. Many patients died as a result of the procedures. The discoveries of anesthesia, antibiotics, disinfectants, and sterile techniques improved the procedures, made surgery much safer, and less painless.  By the 1950s cosmetic surgery was a common, acceptable way to alter one’s physical appearance. Nearly any part of the body may be considered for ‘reconstructive’ or ‘plastic surgery.’ Today, an estimated 20 million procedures are performed annually. Americans spend more than $16 Billion dollars a year on nips and tucks.

   The most popular cosmetic surgeries are breast augmentation, liposuction, nose reshaping, tummy tuck, and buttock augmentation. By far, elective cosmetic procedures most in demand are also the least invasive and less costly. They include;

+   Wrinkle treatment injections (botulinum toxin type-A, such as Botox®, Dysport®) (7 million procedures): national average cost of $385 per treatment, results last up to 6 months.

+  Hyaluronic acid fillers (2 million procedures): national average cost of $644 per treatment, results last up to 9 months

+  Chemical peel (1.3 million procedures): national average cost of $673 per treatment, results last up to 2 months

+  Microdermabrasion (775,014 procedures): national average cost of $138 per treatment, results last about 1 month

+  Laser treatments (Intense Pulsed Light) (656,781 procedures): national average cost of $433 per treatment, results last 2 to 5 years.

Unlike surgical procedures, the effects of the minimally invasive and topical cosmetic procedures are not “permanent.”    Most of these applications will need to be repeated on a regular basis to sustain desired results.

The many medical procedures available to correct skin imperfections and improve the appearance are impressive.  A realistic outcome, lasting effects of treatments, cost, downtime, and associated health risk factors must be diligent considerations in the decision to elect any procedure.  Before you choose to go “under the knife” try a kinder, gentler, natural approach.

Embrace a new lifestyle. It’s never too late to start.

+  A healthier diet. Look for ‘superfoods’ and nutrients that feed the skin as well as the body.

+  Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, three days a week.  Ride a bike, swim, try yoga, or simply take a brisk walk. The effort will increase blood flow, enhance oxygen, and improve the health of the skin, muscles, and body. Outdoor exercise is especially beneficial but always remember the SUNSCREEN!

+  Limit exposure to pollution and free-radicals.  Avoid the threat of sunburn and windburn. If you smoke – STOP. Drink in moderation.

Practice good skin care daily. A quality, gentle cleanser formulated for your skin type will wash away dead skin cells and produce a radiant glow.

+  Be wise – moisturize! Regardless of your age; 20s, 40s, 60s or older, your skin needs moisturizing support to prevent wrinkles and to retain a youthful appearance.

+  Quality counts so choose skin care products that not only deliver the best immediate results but actually work to prevent the signs of aging skin, produce aging reversal, and promote skin wellness.
